Rice is the staple food of Madagascar. It blankets the Red Island in a sea of green. While visually stunning, the island used to be entirely covered in forest. But decades of logging and land-clearing to grow rice have contributed to 90% forest loss and erosion of the island’s characteristic red soils. Madagascar is recognized as a world hotspot for biodiversity. Lemurs, for example, are unique to Madagascar, but could be extinct in the wild in just 25 years!
What does this have to do with our Organic Red Rice? A lot! By working with smallholder farmers who use more efficient farming methods that enable them to harvest more rice from the same plot of land with less water and seed, we can help them increase incomes and food security and reduce pressure to clear more land. And hopefully give the lemurs a fighting chance.
Our Malagasy red rice is 100% whole grain, cooks in about 30 minutes, and is a slender medium grain. It has a slightly nutty flavor and beautiful russet color. It can be used in any rice dish but its hearty flavor means it can be paired with strong ingredients, from venison and pork to wild mushrooms, eggplant, or roasted peppers. It is also is perfect for those dishes in which rice holds the place of honor - as a pilaf, risotto, stir-fry, salad, pudding or steamed plain to accompany vegetable, seafood and meat dishes.
